This was my fifth attempt at painting and my first attempt at using a canvas painted in yellow acrylic. I'd always wanted to paint tree silhouettes over a sunset so I used Bob Ross's "Evergreens at Sunset" as a model.
18x24 on a really low quality, crappy canvas purchased as part of a value pack at WalMart. The canvas itself was crooked and had a piece of wood right down the middle, resulting in an obvious paint line going right through the canvas. It's a shame, too, because this one was a lot of fun.

I made my own liquid black and used that for the sky, then added the red and orange-ish colors and blended it together a bit. For the liquid black, I bought refined linseed oil and mixed that with midnight black paint in a 6:4 ratio, paint to seed oil. As far as advice, I'm not too sure what I could offer. You should check out the joy of painting episode where Bob Ross paints a scene similar to this one, entitled "evergreens at sunset." This was done on a canvas that I had previously painted with a yellow acrylic because of the sun. If you watch the episode you'll see what I'm saying. Good luck!
I love this! Very beautiful, I love the dark colors.
I buy my canvas in a big pack at Michael's and have never had an issue with them. Still, this is really nice work.

That background is amazing! I'm thinking of doing this with hardwoods to study oak silhouettes. Do you have any advice for painting the background?
