Island in the Wilderness

Tom0779 10 Jun 2022

Actually I wanted to finish season 23. But I had to interrupt the project for a specific reason.
As this is my 30th oil painting I wanted to redo this episode because it has been the first one I ever did. It wasn't only the first one I ever did but also the first acrylics painting I ever did.
I have seen some other painters to post also a comparison of the first episode and a repainted version after a while. I think it is a nice idea to do that.
This below version is from 2019 when I started to paint. At this point of time I only had some experience with watercolors, which still is my favorite medium. But I have had watched Bob for several years already and wanted to try his oil painting technique. But I always thought it is to much material needed for oils at that time. Then I discovered acrylics and thought I can use them like oils. However it only works partly like them.
I hope I could improve in the three years ???

Oils Acrylics

Wow a stunning improvement! Your painting is stunning and a great improvement from your first!

It's a great feeling to look back at your older works and see how much you've improved, isn't it? Very nice painting. That's also a very nice background behind the canvases, too. Not sure if that's a table, or a wall, or what...but it looks cool nonetheless.

Thanks Sandy and Alex.
@Alex: actually this is the floor in my (home) office. 😀

Awesome comparison. I have not looked back at your early works so I figured your paintings were always terrific! Your 3 year improvement is very noticeable - I love your work!

Thanks Pam. Actually I did not post my very first paintings. I think they are all a disaster.

Yup huuuge improvement! I’ve only posted my first one myself. I kept that one for sentimental value but my next 5-10 or so was wiped clean with gesso because I didn’t want to waste a canvas with the mess I made. It’s nice seeing just how far we’ve all come as artists!

So much improvement! Beautiful work.

Tremendous improvements, can we say you master now the BR techniques?

Thanks Lilikins, Linzee and joha.
@Lilikins: I never overpainted any of my paintings. But I didn’t use canvases initially. I painted all on paper.
@joha: I don’t know. I think there is always room for improvement, isn’t it?

Nice T!

Thanks P:)

What a striking difference Tom! Do you feel happy when you look at both together?
I recently discovered my first oil painting too I decided to keep it to appreciate what path I have traveled so far.

Well thanks Sunnylady. Of course I feel good when I look back at the below picture. As mentioned, this was made with acrylics on paper (today I know it is hardly possible to follow Bob like this) without experience with this medium :) I think I wouldn't do it this way again.
I plan to do other comparisons (e.g. my first watercolor painting again, or my first oil painting again etc...)
But I do not seriously follow the medium oil, I do this just for fun. Watercolor is the medium I use seriously.
