Covered Bridge Oval

Covered Bridge Oval

My first oval, and a challenging one. At least for me. This is acrylics on 30 x 40 cm canvas panel. The big challenge for me was the bridge of course. This is a complex building with a lot of different elements. I hope it somehow looks right. My contact paper was not the best. So I needed to correct a few places. I am afraid one can see them. Maybe someone can give me an url where he/she orders his version of contact paper?

Dear Tom, I've written an article about contact paper with a link to Amazon, just one of the suppliers of descent contact paper. Please read it!
The bridge is just GREAT! Shape, colouring and fixation (location). I am very amazed that this was done with acrylics! A SUPER JOB!!!

Thanks Voy Kay for the positive comment regarding the painting. Acrylics is an amazing medium. Funny thing is: I watched a lot of online tutorials, but only or watercolors and for oils. But none for acrylics. :)
Shame on me: I really did not see the article... Thanks a lot I will try to get this one.

It is indeed a real queste for finding the right tutorials online with the tools and the subjects we want o work with.
Concerning acrylics, 'The paint sherpa' does have some interesting AND free tutorials to share. Have a look on YouTube for her!

Thanks for the hint Voy Kay. I will check this.
Basically one can do most Bob Ross paintings with acrylics too. Main problem is the background. This is the disadvantage of the short drying time. But this has of course also its advantages.

Great work Tom!
I think the covered bridge this time is almost perfect.
As this composition includes a gentle slope, it makes this picture difficult.
I think this will continue to be useful when drawing cabins, barns, houses, etc.

Thank you Jin. I am pleased that you like this one. Thanks also for the links, I will check them.

Just spotted a little mistake …. it's not the paint sherpa but THE ART SHERPA. Here's the link to her website and free acrylic paint lessons.

Have fun!

Thanks a lot Voy Kay. I will check it.

Tom, you did it! I was looking at it and was trying to figure out how to attack this painting on the small canvas and upside down. Ahaha, not sure if I can even make something nice with this approach but I hope to loosen up! You version looks absolutely amazing! Of course I do not have masking tape to make oval shape, meaning I have to revise the composition, which is so difficult to me as it is. Wish me good luck and to have a lot of fun! tomorrow before my Spanish lessons I think I shall try it! I am very excited about the moment when i turn it back from upside down to normal orientation. I expect it will be ugly, but that will be ok and will not hurt my feelings as I am ready to investigate my limits!

Sorry for this long speech.

I like your painting very much, it so detailed!

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

Thanks a lot Sunnylady. No worries about long speech 😀. Just to give you further insight: I started immediately after finished work (that’s the advantage of home office!) and it took me almost 5 hours to finish it. I think It was the most time consuming one I did yet. Overall I am ok with the result, there is always room for improvement. Of course I think you will ne able to produce a good painting and I look forward to see it.

Good luck!

One more thing. I don’t think that the oval shape is really needed. I think it would look good without it as well. I just wanted to try one with a lighter color. If something goes wrong you can easily correct it.

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

@Sunnylady: Do you think S3E6 would be worth a try? No need to follow it exactly but painting the bridge so you can directly see through it? It might also be challenging to make it look right.

What about S31E7 Bridge to Autumn?

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

@Voy Kay: I posted this one some time ago (I wanted to paint all from S31 :))

Sunnylady Community Darling

I think you are right it will be difficult to make it right, but I am sure you can. I think in that one probably it requires some twist and for example kissing couple silhouettes, or a child with balloons or elderly couple in the middle of the bridge. It will be more interesting to see something through that opening. May be even something in color on the other side of the bridge. In one of the pictures from the link you shared there is exactly that view: through the bridge. Check that there is a light pole, but may be something more interesting.

Oops, my mistake!! Season 31 really is appealing. I finished 28 some months ago, now working on season 24 (4 to go!).

Sunnylady Community Darling

Voy, good catch. One more covered bridge :) Go for it!

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

Thanks for the hints Sunnylady. I usually avoid peoples or animals in my paintings. I am not very good at such things. I think I will follow mainly Bobs painting. Not sure about his background.

Sunnylady Community Darling

I am not good with people either, but I think you can do it if it is just a silhouette. Also a trick i did one time. I had to paint a eagle. I could not do it on my own. So i printed the shape and cut it out and then just used pencil to draw on top of my acrylics and then filled in silhouette.

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

Nice idea. I will check the episode (not seen it fully yet) then I will decide if I change something compared to the original. I have my doubts about painting people or animals. Trees and cabins/barns are my thing😀

Sunnylady Community Darling

I see. I avoid painting people at all cost too. I always get some unproportional monsters. Same with silhouettes in general. My eye is not trained at all for those precise things. :)

Voy Kay Conqueror of Challenges

Tom, let's make a deal! You paint the trees and a cabin, I do a firy sky and all the silhouettes we can place into it!
It will be a masterpiece!!!!! :) :) :)

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

😀 Voy Kay!

Sunnylady Community Darling

Tom, one more idea. You can change seasons at the bridge entrance and exit. It might be interesting too.

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

You are very creative Sunnylady. I will think about it... :)

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

Anyone thought about painting S3E9? I saw this episode yesterday and fell in love with this mill. It looks more challenging than a covered bridge. I want to give it a try on a canvas panel with acrylics.

Sunnylady Community Darling

I did not yet. I like it too but was scared by that oval thing on the mill to put it into right place. I am still struggling with circles in perspective...

Go for it! you are incredibly good with the buildings! I am sure you will succeed.

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

Well yesterdays painting showed me different:) But I will correct it today and upload it again. Hope I don´t ruin it.

This is fantastic. The bridge truly looks suspended over the stream. And I feel like I can skate across the frozen water. Awesome job

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

Thanks beethzart79. I remember this one. It was quite a challenge but I was quite happy with the outcome. I framed this one.
More Bob Ross recreations are planned in Spring.
