Surf's Up

rah 09 May 2021

First seascape, so picked a fairly simple one. Even so, spent around 3 hours to complete and had to stop myself from "fiddling it to death" by adding any more detail. Want to try a tropical seascape next with the sun setting. Found this Bill Alexander 1 hour tutorial which is brilliant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxB6DLc7EpI. I am sure Bob would approve of us all watching this (if you have time).

One of my favorite traits about Bob Ross was that he didn’t have any enemies. He didn’t bad mouth anyone. Even those who might have been angry with him or critical, he simply praised or complimented. He never took the bait (publicly at least. He was very private) and responded angrily. I’m sure he might have felt that way at times. He was human after all but I do admire that. Even after Bill’s criticism of him I can’t find a single solitary response and I bet he would say absolutely go and study his work. The more artists you study the better etc. i have watched a few of his as well. Talented artist. To praise someone’s artistic ability and work is not to subtract from anyone else’s in my opinion. Take this site for example. So many brilliant and talented artists. I think what was added to Bob Ross’s legacy was his genuine kindness and love for others as well as God’s creatures. One guys opinion. Wow. Didn’t think I would turn this response into a book. Sorry :)

Love your seascape by the way. :)

Voy Kay Conqueror of Challenges

I do like the book response AND the painting!
Many true words in there Daniel! And many strong wipes in the wave Robert, the splash and dash is SUPER!!

Thanks Happyisland and Voy! Thanks for taking the time to respond with such interesting comments. I always thought Bob respected Bill and was gratefully for being taught the technique. He was also so willing to share it with others. I wasn't aware that Bill was critical of Bob to be honest, that is a shame considering Bob praised him openly on the Joy of Painting more than once. I agree, and doubt Bob would have responded in a negative way, he didn't seem the type and was always so positive!

Great job

Thanks Matt.

Your foam is very nice! You must have lived by the sea some time to remember those shadows and shapes. Very nice water!

Thank you Sunnylady. Watched a lot of episodes before attempting this. Coming from you that is a wonderful comment. Your seascapes are excellent :)

@rah - thanks a lot. You are surely on a good path with your seascapes!! Learning and practice are the main tools in our toolsets.
