Winter Moon

TheLandscapePainter 12 Oct 2021

Been wanting to try a painting with a limited palette for a while and I really enjoyed this one with just 3 colours. If I did it again I would make the moon brighter and tone down the snow a bit.

Nice work TLP. I mostly tone the snow a bit when I paint with oils or acrylics, depending on the scene. I think it looks more harmonized then.

Thanks everyone.
Thank you tom that's good advice. It looks a bit more blue in real life but it definitely could be better. I took my time with the sky and the mountain then after that the pain kicked in so I rushed the rest. I should have stopped there and done the rest today. I think I've come to the realisation that I'm going to have to paint in more than one session from now on. I would prefer that rather than to have to re-visit every painting. But I'll see what I can do with it. Thanks.

Funny that you mention getting some pain kicking in after the sky and the mountain - my first impression was what a great sky and mountain!! I have never stopped and restarted a landscape, and after a couple of hours I also have pain in my shoulder. Sometimes I will just leave it for 30 minutes or so, maybe get a bite to eat. Then go back and resume with fresh eyes. Your water and reflections are also very well done!

Thank you flippergirl for noticing. When you know you can tell can't you. I think stopping part way through will have to be pre-planned by finding a natural break. I will probably slick up just the top section of the canvas on the first visit and complete that part. I'm don't know if there will be any problem picking up where I left off but it's worth a try.

Once Mgiese84 mentioned doing that - sky portion one night and the remainder the following day - no problems.

Thanks for the tips
I am learning so much from you all

I try to paint 15 minutes a day
Just to keep my brain learning

I love the snow
Looks real
And I like the moon the way it is
It matches the snow

Flippergirl, yes and I remember I did do it once but that was a seascape which was masked off at the horizon line anyway so it was a natural break but for everything else I expect you have to put some thought into planning it. I'm currently planning to do a time consuming night scene and after studying the photo I'm approaching it in 3 sections plus an underpainting. It's bigger than my skill set but I'm excited to have a go. And a first attempt for me - the colourways just happen to be Mgiese84 style.
