As I begin to see my small Newton Winton oil tubes start to get finish, I couldn't help but start to wonder if the actual brand of paint changes how you achieve certain effects and end results.
When I first started, I went and got me some AI slop and asked AI to recommend some paints I can start with. What it came back with were the following:
Gamblin 1980
Winton Student
Bob Ross Inc
Now, being the frugal whipper snapper that I am, I picked up the Winton because they were a few bucks cheaper than the rest and I am leaving the whole documentary opinions aside for now. But what gets my nickers up in a bunch is making sense of all this. One person says Winton is better than Gamblin. Then another person says Gamblin is stiffer and drier than Winton. Some say just get the bob paint and cut out the variables. Others say that Bob Ross Inc brand paint isn't as dry as it used to be. Others say it's the same. Other use completely other brands.
So you, my fellow Rossinites: what are you painting with? Did you switch brands? Do you not care about the brands at all? Did you find certain brands are better for certain things vs others?
I am not trying to be a brand snob or a gear snob. I just want to know that when I work with something, it is working with me and not against me.
PS, I didn't get to paint this weekend. Sad tree noises.
