I've created KalmKanine.com last week to make training my own dog easier.
It uses the much recommenden [Relaxation Protocol by Dr. Karen Overall] (https://journeydogtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/ProtocolforRelaxation.pdf) to help you train your dog to stay calm when weird things happen around them.
The protocol consists of 15 sets of exercises that systematically teach your dog learn to relax while "weird" things happen around them. A session works like this:
- Start your dog in a sit or a down.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- If your dog stays in their position calmly reward them with a treat and a little praise.
- Repeat until the session is done.
If your dog gets up or moves from a down to a sit end the exercise and try again later or tomorrow.
I've started the protocol at least four times now with my dog Lotta. She's a three year old maltese. Super cheeky and learns very quickly, but also pretty nervous.
While we were seeing results fast (or at least I think we did) we always stopped after a maximum of three days.
Printing the instructions and using the papers to look up what to do during every session was to cumbersome for me to stick with the protocal.
That's why I decided to create a small web app that makes training and doing the protocol much easier.
Rule #1 for dog training: you've got to make it as easy as possible and set your dog (and yourself) up for success!
KalmKanine is designed to be used on your smartphone, so it doesn't look great on larger screens.
You can add it to your phone's homescreen so it looks and feels like an app (and you don't have to remember the URL)
iPhone:
- Open KalmKanine.com in Safari on your iPhone
- Tap the "Share" Button
- Slide to "Add to Home Screen" and tap it
- Tap "Add" on the top right
Android:
- Open KalmKanine.com in Chrome
- Open the settings (top right, three dots)
- Tap "Add to Home Screen"
