Original Creation

Lanzarote Gateway

Tom0779 02 Jun 2020

I painted this one last year following an instruction video from Frank Clarke. I put in two tiny people which I rarely do in my paintings. The scene shows a Gateway scene which is typical in Lanzarote.

It is great Tom! You master a lot of styles!
The distant Atlantic ocean attracts the couple for a very sunny walk. Great colours on the bushes, that red goes so well with the hard green and the soft walls!

Thanks Voy. I still think this one is not the very best, in fact it was one of the first paintings I did. However at that time I was really proud of this one.

And you should be proud! It's a foundation, a corner stone to your later work.
As Bob mentions so many times that the secret to become a good/better painter is …. practice, practice, practice …. :) :)

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

This is true, practice is everything. I learned so much since I started to paint in August 2019. I wished I had more time.

I started oil painting early Dec 2019. Never knew I had it in me! Concerning time, I am retired from being a hotel and airplane inspector so plenty of time around except …. I have a grocery garden en greenhouse that needs daily care AND I am still renovating our house (we moved Nov 2016 into a 43 year's old villa). But I am not complaining, I spend a lot of time on this site because of the social aspect as well as the artistic richness!
Und ich freue mich sehr!! :)

For me its a similar experience. I never thought I would ever paint a picture, even I watch Bob Ross since years to relax. I always thought I might try it but never seriously followed it.
I did it because of my daughter (5 years), she is very creative and paints all the time. So I started painting with her and soon got to watercolors. It was that much fun and relaxing I really started to get serious with it and watched some videos.
Later on I discovered acrylics and recognized with them you can actually paint Bob Ross scenes. Now oils to follow. I had planned a day at a CRI to learn some tips and tricks, but then COVID19 came. But yet I think I can do it just I always did by watching instruction videos.

Watching Bob helps enormously, receiving tips and tricks in this community is another part, the rest is sheer experience, practice and daring!
I am glad my daughter (22) is a natural talent since she was 2 and we never seized motivating her to endeavour her creativity! I might be more complete but she is the better artist!
You and I Tom, we are amongst a very large group that got the Bob Ross virus which is fortunately a healthy one!
If ever you get that CRI lesson, please tell us all about it (article)!!
Have a great week!!!

Beautiful painting Tom!
I think you are way too shy about painting people. They look great!

I think today is day for me to talk about complimentary colors as all the paintings today have reds an greens working so well together! I like these green gates contrasting with red flowers!

I like that person wears red sweater which unites them with flowers and eye initially caught by the brilliant green and reds is traveling further to stop at that couple.

It is beautiful work Tom!

Well thanks Sunnylady. I think people in the distance are quite easy to paint. But personally I prefer landscapes without them, but this is just my preference. The doors in Lanzarote have to be green, in fact they are all bright green as I learned. But I can’t remember the reason.
However I am pleased that you like this one. I painted lot more watercolors. They are faster to finish, maybe I share a few of them in the future.

Tom, I hear you, I dont like to have people in landscapes too. But sometimes I do an exception to improve composition and further they are the better for me :)
I think this painting would not feel complete without that couple.
Once again - wonderful job! Please do post more water colors!

Yes I agree. In this painting the two people are a must. I will post a few more watercolor paintings.
I think the whole painting is about the contrast between red and green.

I like this one. but ・・・
There is a TV show in Japan which a professional artist assess watercolors, and many stars have so far drawn many incredible masterpieces. At this time there are three points when assessing it,
How to cut the screen (composition) Accurate depiction (perspective shape accuracy) Light and dark (whether the light and dark can be accurately expressed) There are three other evaluation points. First, why don't you think about your drawing by referring to the three most important points?

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

Well Jin, thanks for the recommendation. I usually don´t do a lot of paintings where a lot of drawing is needed. This was one of my first works ever, and I know some parts look terrible :) On the other hand in watercolor I agree with you drawing is much more important but I almost do no watercolors any more as they are too difficult for me.

Dear Tom
This work does not have terrible part.
I only want you to know the 3 important points.
That's all I want to say.

Tom0779 Multi-Medium-Talent

I understand Jin. It was just my opinion about the painting :) I would never have shared it because I think it is not a good one. No worries.
