Painting destroyed after varnish

Tom0779 29 Apr 2022

I wanted to varnish my 2021 oil and acrylic paintings. Acrylic worked fine, also did the first 3 oil paintings. But then this happened. The color went off and a painting I worked 3 hours has been destroyed in 3 minutes.
Anyone has any idea what went wrong?

That's terrible Tom, sorry to see it. What varnish did you use?

Hi Tom, have you used spray or brush to varnish?

Does it have acrylic underpainting?
What is SDS of varnish and what solvent you used during painting?
Can you do close up photo?

My current suspicion is that oil paint was too thin in those areas.
Second idea incompatibility of chemicals.

You can send me email with photos of varnish label and photo in uncompressed jpg.

Thanks a lot Nivek & Sunnylady.
Well I use Schmincke Universal Varnish, the brush version. I think I got the issue now and it was clearly my fault. On this day I gave my acrylic paintings a varnish coat (here I use a different varnish), then I cleaned my brush for varnish (2 1/2 inch flat brush) with brush cleaner.
Then I dries the brush (beating it etc..) But I think it might not be 100% dry and on this painting the problem appeared. This has a very rough cheap canvas and it seems the paint was easily removed from there.
Also the other paintings (3 more) got a bit of paint remove, but actually you need to look very closely at it.
Overall it seems to be my fault. But it is all a learning procedure. I always prefered the varnish from the bottle, because I think I get a much better surface with this. In the future I will change to spray version :)
