Are silhouettes a cop out?....I love silhouettes and have posted many on TIB but do they have any artistic merit?
One of the best things about silhouettes is they can be a convenient but still enjoyable "stop gap" when your not feeling particularly energised in regard to a approaching a full on detailed landscape, a nice way to "keep your hand in" you might say.
Silhouettes
I don’t know if I would say a cop-out for fear of offending but I would say a definite shortcut that anyone could do TC.
Interesting question! I think many old Tonalist landscapes veer pretty close to silhouettes and are often magnificent paintings, imo.
I only started painting last year (done a little over a dozen now), but I've always loved a silhouette againt a vibrant background.

Not a cop out in my view. I've done all sorts of crafting so I'm used to using many different kinds of materials while creating so to me silhouettes on paintings are no different. If you can't draw a donkey I don't see the harm in using a silhouette as a base and working on that, and that's my excuse
