Being British we prefer the term "holiday" which is something the majority of the UK population do once maybe twice a year.
I don't have the statistics but most UK people will typically holiday in Europe with Greece,, Spain and Portugal amongst the top destinations for holiday makers.
Closer to home and without the hastle of the airport to endure we like Blackpool. Brighton, scarborough Cornwall and the beautiful Lake district which has some of the most fantastic scenery anywhere in the world (pack your easels!)

Tel, my hubby is seriously ill and I'm planning him a surprise few days away in Windermere while we still can. You are right, it's a beautiful place to spend some time. I won't be taking my easel but I'll be taking photos as I enjoy painting from those instead in oil. A plain air wouldn't survive the journey home:
