I don't hate it, but I don't exactly love it either. Any suggestions on how to make the lights a little ethereal looking?

I think you had a similar problem that I had, in a acrylic, this is pretty hard to do, in oils much easier because of the wet on wet.
That said the lights i think are more of a tickle with the brush, but they will be totally different in oils, and he also used a black canvas too i believe. I think if you try it with oils, you will see a much more different effect.
