Northern Lights

cmcox120 29 Mar 2021

This is my attempt. Didn’t finish it completely. Weirdly this was my first attempt at a mountain, and for some reason the paint broke mostly correct. Since this I haven’t been able to do it. Paint too wet? So frustrating. Burned through 2 canvases trying to get it to work. No luck.

The best paint breakage I have found is also on black canvas, I think its because its covered with a very thin layer of liquid clear followed by thick paint which is a great combination for paint breaking. If you put liquid clear on thin enough it behaves differently to magic white, as the air gets to liquid clear, it seems to become a little bit tacky which really helps break the paint when you skim over it with the knife. If it's not breaking when you use magic white its a bit too wet, wipe a bit off with a clean dry brush before you start your mountain. When you make a mistake you can scrape it off. Your northern lights are really nice.

Great job! My paint sticks on the mountain and then I just smudge it around. 🤣
