Back to experimenting with a smaller canvas (14x11). I've always struggled with trying to use the bigger brushes in such confined spaces. So...

For this painting, I only used a one-inch brush, the smaller-sized knife, and some half-inch brushes (flat, filbert) with this one. Very pleased with the results. Plus, I learned something.

As long as I remember HOW to achieve a desired effect (i.e. dragging out a mountain, applying grass, making the 'Z' trees, whatever) it doesn't matter WHAT brush I use. For so long, I've been hung up on using the exact same tools that Bob used. But, now, I'm trying new things and seeing what happens.

For example, the near mountain here was made with a half-inch flat brush. I did drag some of it out with a one-inch brush, but most was made with the flat brush. And, the pines were made using the half-inch filbert brush. Granted, using tiny brushes on big 18x24 canvases might not be the way to go. But, for smaller work spaces, I found the smaller tools worked better.

Anyway, I like how this one turned out. One of my better paintings. Now, it's time to invest in some higher quality flat and filbert brushes.

Best wishes.

Came out beautiful! Good learning experience with good results!

Nice work Alex, mountains, trees and the coastline looks great!

Thank you, Sandy. Always good to learn something new.

Jos: Your works on smaller canvases have inspired me to give them a try again, only with smaller brushes this time. The filbert brush worked great on the trees. And, I didn't have to load it up with a ton of paint like I usually need to when using a fan brush. Win-win!
