Wicket

Boof 06 Feb 2021

Gah! So this is my sisters other cat Wicket. This was a challenge for me! Not super happy with the overall result. I love how the couch turned out in the background and the color of Wickets eyes. But holy smokes the fur was a challenge. I definitely should have done some research before jumping into this one and I really should not have added acrylics into the equation. I did not capture the smoothness of her fur that i desired. However my painting was doomed to be textured from the get-go because this was painted over another very textured oil painting. It was quite difficult to not just end up with a great big blob of white. BUT. I live to paint another day. My next painting will have some happy little trees in it.

Oils

Even if you not happy consider it as part of the learning process, the head is actually rather good

I love the ears. And you’re right the couch turned out nicely. Question: this was on a recycle canvas that was done in oil? Please don’t be upset, but you can’t paint acrylic over oil. It’s going to flake off with time. Oil will “breathe” but acrylic can’t. It’s great to recycle canvas, keep in mind the mediums you’re using though if you intend it to be more than practice.

Thank you for the tip doggymommy! I had no idea about that. The painting i painted over was oil but wicket has streaks of acrylic fur mixed with oil fur. It did not mix well lol

Lol I can imagine not. It’s sad the two mediums can’t mix. You can put oil over acrylic but never the other way around. And they don’t mix.

Those ears are so cute! What kind of cat is that? I do really like that couch. Doggymommee is right about acrylic over oils. It won’t adhere for long if you put oil on the base and add acrylics over. However a lot of people do like to paint acrylics first as the base because they dry quickly. Then they paint oil on top of it because the oil gives more of a soft texture as opposed to harsher lines that acrylic gives.

My sister doesn't know what breed, they just adopted the little girl. I'm guessing some kind of bengal mix. So just to be clear; I've done one of bob's black canvas paintings- I painted the canvas with black acrylic and then everything else was oil on top. Will that painting deteriorate?

No. Having acrylic on the bottom is 100% ok. Oil always on top :)

Excellent! Thanks for the helpful feedback!!
