Original Creation

Sawtooth and Friends

Caylakas 26 Jan 2023

This is actually four mountains in Colorado. On the right is Mt. Bierstadt, Sawtooth is in the middle, Mt Evans is the next high point to the left, and on the far left is Mt. Spaulding. I did this painting for my niece, who lives in Colorado and has climbed all of these. The figure is a little twisted but I'm not very good at figures so it is what it is. I really like how the mountains came out. Good training for this picture was Bob's painting "Not Quite Spring". This is 16 by 20, oil on stretched canvas.

Really beautiful! So well done...love the mountains and your other details are really good!

Thanks so much!

I really like the figure. It really shows the majesty of the mountain range next to the tiny human. Well done.

That makes sense. Thanks!

Really well done, I especially like the mountains and the feeling of space created by adding the small person.

Those mountains & sky are incredible Brian! It looks like a picture. The hiker is such a great addition and looks great. I can see the sticks he/she is holding to help hike though the terrain. Your niece will be delighted about this painting of yours. Great job!!

Thanks, Tom and Nancy! Just for interest, I added the reference photo that Jessica sent me. I felt like the interesting part of the mountains was too small and far away and there were no trees except for the dark ones in the distance. So I moved everything further downhill and added trees. I love seeing reference photos because it’s so interesting to see what inspires a painting and what the artist adds to it of their own.

Fantastic! Terrific mountains ranges with the different textures, the evergreens are super, and I like the way you did the impression of the grasses in the foreground! Oh, and such real clouds. Love that little person too for size comparison.

Thanks, Pam! I tried to give the impression that the figure was looking downhill by making the mid distance trees actually be behind the hillside and then actually on top of the hill as they came forward. I never really thought about it but yes, the figure really does lend a sense of scale to the vastness of the mountains.

Also, for what it's worth, I didn't use any liquid white on this painting, just some linseed oil on the blank canvas. It really keeps the colors very bright and vibrant. At high altitudes the air is just crystal clear and I wanted to capture that in the sky and mountains.

This is wonderful!

Thanks, Brian. Glad you like it!
