Another one of my old paintings from college days, and only one of two I sold. (Don't have a good photo of the other one). Acrylics, 18x24 canvas. This is a common sight where I live- Geese make nests in parking lots and, honestly, while geese do have a protective instinct that's well-documented, the ones in my college parking lot tended to be so used to humans and cars, they ignore them entirely. Unfortunately some people took that as license to be rather nasty to them or to even bring out "nest sniffing dogs" to find and steal the eggs to encourage the mothers to leave. It inspired this painting and the accompanying reference photo - this goose in particular had her nest right in the median between my car and another car and let me take pictures and didn't even show any annoyance, nor did her gander standing a little ways away.
The Canada Goose always gets a bad rap. I hated to read about what you said people did to them. But you have captured to goose's likeness so very well.
Beautiful painting!
Nice painting.
@KerriG ganders/males can be extremely aggressive in some cases, so it's not entirely an undeserved stereotype. However, the females usually are not. And even with ganders , usually if you ignore them or don't act suspicious I.E. trying to sneak by like a predator might, they will usually leave you alone, or at least leave you alone after Chasing You a short distance. However, it always made me sad when a pair nested somewhere without bothering people because they felt safe, only to have people pick on them. These geese that used to Nest around my college had been fed by students for Generations and were very friendly. But the campus administrators were not happy about them being there because of poop on the sidewalk and occasionally once or twice a gander chased somebody. Hence the administrators hiring people to chase them off or to take a nest sniffing dog to take the eggs. It was really sad. I had one goose that used to sit by the picnic table I would eat lunch at, and I would toss raisins to it. It was never aggressive, it just would chill waiting for the raisins. I took a picture of this mother nested before they were unfortunately driven off. It was right before summer break so I hope she got her goslings hatched before the geese were all scared away. I didn't find out.
