Original Creation

Thirty Nights At Sea

Felix 24 Jul 2025

My girlfriend will spend all of August at sea in a research cruise for her PhD. As a farewell gift I created this calender for her.

I printed two of them by hand, one for her and one for me. I'll add a stamp so that we can each count down the days.

Maybe I'll add a yellow light in the lighthouse

I wondered what you were going to do with it. I'm sure she will love it. That's a definite yes for the light!

I wasn't happy with how strong and cold the contrast of the black was I printed another one with a black that I warmed up with a little bit of yellow.

It's not noticeable unless they're next to each other, but the whole print feels way warmer and friendlier.

I'll see about the light tomorrow

I know what you mean. I've been contemplating the same issue. I have an idea of something I'd like paint from my childhood based on a TV programme I enjoyed watching on our black and white TV. I will be treating it as shades of grey, without using straight black or straight white. Black and white can be striking and contemporary but sometimes it's a little bit too stark isn't it. I think you were right to warm it up, it reminds me of newsprint.

wow, that is awesome!

This is so lovely!

Did you use linoleum?
And what kind of ink do you use?
I still have this old ink which needs thinner (real thinner, not the odourless paint thinner we use for oils) and it is hell to work with. So I got some oil based ink for which I can use the odourless thinner. I have not used it yet though...

Yes, its linoleum. I'll post a few more pics of the final one in a few weeks, then you can see the printing plate.
I'm also making stamps for both of us which will add a bit of color to this monochromatic print.

I'm using oil based paint that is water washable. I've tried water based ones, but these dry too quick to do any serious work. Fully oil based are always too much of a hassle to clean up, which makes me print less
