Original Creation

Secluded Falls

ForestVueGallery 03 Feb 2023

Inspired by a photo of Hill oil painting, I created this in acrylics then finished and highlighted with oils. I noticed my oils being absorbed a little by the acrylic so I’m thinking I’ll need to seal the acrylic somehow before applying oil. Does anyone have a suggested acrylic product for this?
20x24 stretched canvas, Golden fluid acrylic, Gamblin oils.

Oils Acrylics

You will need to apply varnish and oils will shine again. Oil sinks into the acrylic layer, same it does with canvas itself. Cure is varnishing as it is a common behavior of dark hues of oil paints to become dull. Somehow light colors are not that affected.

I love the water color and texture, your rocks and trees are amazing!

Thank you Sunnylady. I've got the Dammar Picture Varnish you recommended in the past but haven't used as well as Gamvar Gloss. I'm always reluctant to varnish as I don't care for a shiny finish. I'll have to experiment.

Thank you Cronenberg. I have been attempting to paint water the way I see it in nature. On this I don't care for the waterfall and would use blues and blacks rather than the browns in the future. The trees were a big focus on this and I'm learning to use more highlights. I pulled the long edge of a liner brush back and forth to create the moving water which provided a more natural look.
