Bill Alexander - Sunset IV

Jbay2020 22 Jul 2020

My attempt at Bill Alexander's 'Sunset IV.'. This one was no small task. It was my 12th painting ever and took about 7 hours.

I'm still not satisfied with the foreground shrubs. I may repaint the foreground to make it darker. I think my problem is not letting enough background show through sometimes to create depth.

I also think my main house is a little too big. But it was satisfying competing it.

Awesome painting! Your reds are gorgeous!
I cannot see smaller house but I think the big one has a good size which makes lake smaller and atmosphere becomes cozy.

Thanks. I intentionally left off the foreground tree foliage. I thought even Bill's version looked much better without it. It seemed to get too busy when he added those leaves.

I told someone after I finished that this was basically 3 pairings in one. The sky and sun alone could stand as a whole work, then the background, then the foreground. The trees were very tough. Bill really gave no tips on how to make them, but mimicking his knife work seemed to be good by the final tree on the right.

Anyone who tackles this one has my respect.

Love the colours used, the water is beautiful...great job!

You certainly have the feel of Bill Alexander's work. I have a couple of his books and your hues and technique are great! Good painting!
