My niece wanted a painting of Mt St Helens, so I painted this from a photo with permission by the photographer Craig Goodwin at https://www.craiggoodwinphoto.com/ . I took a few liberties, lightening things up a bit, adding more water, trees and flowers to show the joy of rebirth.
I agree with Jin. Painting from something real opens up a whole range of challenges and the rewards can be satisfying. I like the texture in your mountain.
Thanks! Yes, this took much longer than my other paintings, but it was fun to figure out ways to paint the various features - I learned a lot!
This is incredible. I grew up in Vancouver WA in the shadow of MSH, and summitted in 2020. I was just telling my husband today that I can't wait until Johnston Ridge reopens. Your painting is lovely, makes me so happy to see something so local and close to my heart represented in a global community.

Painting real mountains is far more challenging than painting the kinds of mountains Bob Ross created. With a few exceptions, actual mountains usually have very complex shapes. Nicely done!
