Apple of My Eye

Lilikins 23 Feb 2021

I meant to post this on my 1 year painting anniversary - only a week late. I was initially going to color this but my husband wants me to leave it monochrome. The latest painting event challenged me to paint in a different way and I find that I really enjoy it. Spending time highlighting and shading to mimic the photo is really relaxing for me.

Voy Kay Conqueror of Challenges

Love at first bite!

So much realism in there. Colouring (your hubby was right!) and shading about perfect!
Yet another masterpiece from your hand Lilikens!

I am speechless Lilikins! This is wonderful grisaille painting! Shadows and highlights everything is beautiful!
I want to suggest you to try glazing. You will reach incredible power with such kind of the base!
Impressive work here!

I meant glazing with oils on the top of acrylics. You will see incredible depth and brilliance of transparent colors with mediums. You already know how to glaze in acrylics and if you like you can try the glazes with oils.

Voy Kay- haha thank you! He looked so sad when I said I was going to glaze color on top of it so I decided to leave it as it is and practice glazing on another painting - he can have this one.

Sunnylady - thank you! I didn’t know it was called grisaille. Learned something new! I really want to try glazing with oils but I’m still scared. I have asthma and after I got sick last year my lungs took a real beating. I’m still not fully recovered and not sure if I will ever be so acrylics just seemed like a safer alternative for me. I would really love to try them though. I bought some transparent acrylics that are intended for glazing that I will try on my next still life but I know oils give way more depth and realism. There’s just something about oils that you just can’t 100% replicate with acrylics.

Oh, wish the fullest recovery and the soonest one.
Maybe you will be able to look into water soluble oil paints when fully recovered. The health is the first priority.

Wow! Just wow! Happy one year anniversary (again). I know I said it already, but I will say it again. I am so impressed with how far you came in only one year! I feel like I am still on the same level I was when I started, lol.

Sunnylady- I just heard about those! I didn’t realize they existed until I think it was tel that was talking about them. I will give those a try in the summer when I can paint with the window open.

Doggymommee- thank you so much! I know you’ve improved. Sometimes I feel like my painting improvement is one step forward, 2 steps back. You should see some of my painting fails - especially early on when I would just get discouraged and give up instead of powering through. I might post them later just to give people hope that it does get better lol
