King Alexander I of Yugoslavia (1888 – 1934), was a pivotal figure in the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He ascended to the throne in 1921 after the death of his father, King Peter I. He sought to unify the diverse ethnic and religious groups within his kingdom but faced significant political tensions.
To consolidate power and curb divisions, he established a dictatorship in 1929 and renamed the state Yugoslavia. His reign ended in 1934 when he was assassinated in Marseille, France, during a state visit, becoming one of the first heads of state killed on film. His death marked a turning point in Yugoslav history.
