Branislav Nušić (1864–1938) was a renowned Serbian playwright, satirist, novelist, essayist, and also the founder of modern Serbian comedy. His works are known for his wit, irony, and deep understanding of social structures. He portrayed the absurdities of bureaucracy and the pretentious behavior of the middle class.
His comedies are often filled with satire and social critique, reflecting the everyday life and political atmosphere of Serbia at the end of the XX century. He also wrote essays, novels, and travelogues, using humor as a tool to encourage thought and reform. He's one of the most performed and beloved writers in Serbian literature.
