Danilo Kiš

MilanC 12 May 2025

Danilo Kiš (1935 – 1989) was a Yugoslav and Serbian novelist, story writer, essayist and translator. He's renowned for his profound explorations of memory, identity, and the traumas of XX century. He was born in a town of Subotica, to a Hungarian Jewish father and a Montenegrin Serb mother. His life was deeply marked by the horrors of World War II, when his father died in Auschwitz concentration camp.

This personal tragedy soon deeply influenced his literary work. Now, he's known for his modernist style and explorations of memory, identity, and totalitarianism, while drawing on his Jewish heritage and losses during World War II. His legacy endures as a powerful voice against totalitarianism.
