Desanka Maksimović (1898 - 1993) was a Serbian poet, writer and also a translator. She was best known for her lyrical and emotional poetry. Her work often explored love, nature, patriotism, and human suffering. She was also the first female poet to gain widespread acceptance in the Yugoslav literature and the general public.
One of her most famous poems is "A Bloody Fairy Tale" (Serbian: "Krvava bajka"), which mourns the Kragujevac massacre, which was a massacre of Serbian pupils during World War II. She was a beloved literary figure in Serbia and a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
