Đorđe Balašević (1953 – 2021) was a well known Serbian singer, songwriter, poet, and novelist. He was born in a town of Novi Sad, Serbia. He was a prolific singer and writer, who captured the hearts of audiences across the former Yugoslavia with his introspective and songs about love, life, and social issues. One of the albums, called "The Nineties" (Serbian: "Devedesete"), is his 10th studio album.
It was inspired by the events in Serbia, during the 1990s Yugoslav Wars, and his most politically involved albums. One of the songs from this album is called "Living Freely" (Serbian: "Živeti slobodno"), which was the anthem of civic youth movement "Resistance" (Serbian: "Otpor"), an organization which led the battle against the regime of Slobodan Milošević (1941 - 2006), and led to his overthrow.
The song was soon adapted to the current anti-corruption protests in Serbia, led by students against the Serbian authorities. These protests were caused by the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, which killed 16 people. Today, the song sings about the battle against the ruling regime of Aleksandar Vučić (1970).
