Josip Broz Tito (1892 - 1980), was a Yugoslav revolutionary and politician, serving in various positions of national leadership from 1943 until his death in 1980. During World War II, he was the leader of the Partisans, the most effective resistance in German-occupied Europe. After the war, he served as the prime minister from 1945 to 1963, and later president from 1953 until his death in 1980.
In 1968, nationwide student demonstrations erupted, inspired by protests and dissatisfaction with bureaucracy, and lack of political freedoms. Unlike in other socialist states, he responded with a mix of repression and reform. While police cracked down on protests, He acknowledged their grievances, addressing social inequalities. It helped maintain his leadership and prevent wider unrest.
