Josip Broz Tito (1892 - 1980), was a Yugoslav communist revolutionary who served in various positions of national leadership from 1943 until his death in 1980. After the liberation of Yugoslavia in 1945, he served as its prime minister from 1945 to 1963, and president from 1953 until his death in 1980.
He led the Yugoslav Partisans, one of the most effective resistance movements of World War II. He united various ethnic groups under a communist-led anti-fascist struggle, liberating large areas without major Allied support. He emerged as the leader of the new socialist Yugoslavia, gaining recognition for his leadership and independence from both Nazi Germany and later, the Soviet Union.
