The Visoki Dečani Monastery is a medieval Serbian Orthodox Christian monastery located near Deçan, Kosovo. It was founded in the first half of the XIV century by a Serbian king, Stefan Dečanski (1284 - 1331). It's by far the largest medieval church in the Balkan peninsula and one of the hardest architectural achievements of the XIV century. Its architectural style emerged with Serbia in the XII century.
It also contains frescos which show key moments from both Serbian history and Christian tradition. It features a large collection of Byzantine paintings. For many centuries, it played a huge role in preserving the cultural and national identity of Serbs in Kosovo. The portals, windows, consoles, and capitals are richly decorated.
