Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 – 1968) was an American Baptist minister, civil rights activist and political philosopher who was the leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. He was known for advancing civil rights for people of color through the use of civil disobedience against Jim Crow laws and other forms of legalized discrimination.
Known for advocating nonviolent resistance to discrimination, when he delivered the "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. His efforts were instrumental in the passage of landmark civil rights legislation, and he remains a symbol of equality and justice worldwide.
