On November 1st, 2024, at 11:52 AM, the canopy of the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, claiming lives of 16 people and leaving one with severe injuries. It was built in 1964, and renovated from 2021 to 2024, as part of the fast railways project from Belgrade to Budapest. It triggered mass protests across the country, fueled by dissatisfaction with other issues like government corruption and censorship.
Today it marks exactly 12 months since this tragic event, with 16 people dead and no one held accountable for their deaths. That’s exactly why these protests aren't just a memorial, but a strong statement against negligence, corruption, and lack of justice. People express frustration that a year has passed without anyone facing any consequences for the disaster that happened.
On that day, 14 people were killed in the collapse and 3 others were injured. They were in serious condition had undergone severe amputations. One of the victims died 16 days later from her severe injuries. The last victim died on March 21st, 2025, after months of fighting for his life. Most of them were from Serbia, except for one North Macedonian citizen. Among the victims were:
01. Milica Adamović (2008 - 2024), from Kać;
02. Sanja Ćirić Arbutina (1989 - 2024), from Kać;
03. Đorđe Firić (1971 - 2024), from Kovilj;
04. Sara Firić (2018 - 2024), from Kovilj;
05. Valentina Firić (2014 - 2024), from Kovilj;
06. Stefan Hrka (1997 - 2024), from Belgrade;
07. Mileva Karanović (1948 - 2024), from Kać;
08. Nemanja Komar (2007 - 2024), from Stepanovićevo;
09. Miloš Milosavljević (2003 - 2024), from Knićanin;
10. Goranka Raca (1966 - 2024), from Novi Sad;
11. Vukašin Raković (1955 - 2024), from Bukovac;
12. Anđela Ruman (2004 - 2024), from Stara Pazova;
13. Vasko Sazdovski (1979 - 2024), from Sveti Nikole, North Macedonia;
14. Đuro Švonja (1947 - 2024), from Stepanovićevo;
15. Anja Radonjić (2000 - 2024) from Paraćin;
16. Vukašin Crnčević (2006 - 2025), from Zmajevo.
These innocent people lost their lives due to corruption and negligence. Despite 12 months passing, no one has been held responsible, which is why protests are still ongoing. It's mostly a failure of the system to protect its people. It’s a strong reminder that corruption isn’t just theft, it can cost lives when safety is ignored.
