On November 1st, 2024, the canopy of the Novi Sad railway station collapsed and left 16 people dead. This tragedy led to widespread protests across Serbia, with people demanding accountability and attributing the disaster to government corruption and negligence. They also led to various political repercussions, with resignations of some government officials.
On January 29th, 2025, students from Belgrade announced their journey by foot from Belgrade to Novi Sad to join the blockade on February 1st, to mark 3 months since the tragedy. On January 31st, in the evening hours, they arrived in Novi Sad, where they were greeted by many people. Together, they held a silent vigil at the Novi Sad railway station, with 15 minutes of silence.
On February 1st, 2025, a protest was held in Novi Sad, to mark 3 months since the canopy collapse. The protest started with 15 minutes of silence for the victims of the Novi Sad tragedy. Most of the bridges were blocked for only 3 hours, while the Liberty Bridge (Serbian: Most Slobode), was blocked for 24 hours. Taxi drivers from Belgrade organized a lift back to Belgrade for students, completely free of charge.
