Dona was a city dog in Novi Sad, who was well known and liked by local residents. She was often seen in and around protest gatherings, particularly when students were active in blockades and marches. Dona was recognized for her presence at numerous demonstrations in Novi Sad. She symbolizes resistance and solidarity, often accompanying protesters and drawing affection from locals.
On January 24th, 2025, during a general strike in Novi Sad, she was tragically run over by an ambulance from the Clinical Center of Vojvodina. She sadly died from her injuries, despite the efforts by students to rush her to a veterinary clinic. This led to public outrage and a gathering at the City Hall to honor her memory.
A criminal complaint was filed against the driver, but the Prosecutor's Office later dismissed the complaint. Also, the request for a public monument honoring her legacy was rejected by the city administration. She's remembered as a symbol of solidarity, bringing together protest movements and animal protection advocates.
