Stjepan Filipović (1916 – 1942) was a Yugoslav Partisan, who's known for the iconic photograph taken shortly before his execution in Valjevo in 1942. His photo soon became a resistance symbol against fascism during World War II. He was later proclaimed People's Hero of Yugoslavia in 1949.
A motto of the Yugoslav Partisans was "Smrt fašizmu, sloboda narodu" (English: "Death to fascism, freedom to the people!"). With his hands raised in the air, he shouted the phrase, becoming a symbol of resistance and the fight for freedom.
