In November 2024, a series of anti-corruption protests began in Serbia, following the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, which killed 16 people. Since then, students demanded accountability for government corruption and negligence. They led to significant repercussions, including the resignations of some officials.
The original photo was taken during the blockade in Belgrade. They're also known as "Zastani, Srbijo" (English:"Serbia, stop"), and they're held at 11:52 AM, the time of the collapse, and held for 16 minutes to symbolize the lives lost in the disaster. The name is the opposite of "Srbija ne sme da stane" (English: "Serbia must not stop"), a parliamentary group led by the ruling Serbian Progressive Party or SNS.
On December 10th, 2024, during a 15-minute blockage in Belgrade, while people were paying respects to lives lost in a tragedy, a man physically attacked one of the students. He was soon arrested and charged with assault. The incident was caught on camera and this photo became one of the symbols of these protests.
This photo is also known as the two faces of Serbia. On the left, it shows a student, who wants justice, and on the right, an SNS supporter, who supports corruption.
