For this painting, I choose something symbolic to represent the current situation in our country, those being the anti-corruption protests in Serbia. The background to these ongoing protests was the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, which left 16 people dead. Since then, we were fighting for justice, walked and cycled for miles, connected different cities, all while seeking help from other countries.
It wasn't just a tragedy, it was also a crime, caused by government corruption and negligence. This isn't just for those who lost their lives to this disaster, but also for those in the future, since we don't want them to suffer the same fate. That's why we're fighting to take down this regime, since it's destroying our country and it's slowly killing us. They're even ordering the police to arrest innocent people.
If there were people who would change the world for the better, then they would be Serbian students. Even police brutality can't stop us, even if they use weapons which are prohibited by law. For more than a year, they were lying, robbing, and now they're arresting those who are innocent.
If this doesn't unite us, then our future will never be bright. Basically, we will either end up in jail or be killed by this regime. Help us change the world for the better.

My original painting was sold at the charity bazaar, which was held at our school during the school blockade. It was also sold along with other paintings I had painted.
Nice job. Is there a relevance to the colors you chose?
For the colors, they're not really relevant, however, they could mean the following:
Blue is for our vision and responsibility and also represents the belief in a better future and our intellectual integrity. It also reflects the calm discipline of organized protests, based on knowledge and critical thinking.
Red is for courage and urgency. It symbolizes the bravery of young people standing up to power. It could also reference the protest symbol, the red handprint, which has the meaning of the bloody hands, since these people lost their lives to corruption.
Green is for youth and rebirth, a clear symbol of students as the fresh force of change. It stands for renewal of society, environmental awareness, and a break from corruption. It could also reference peace.
Yellow represents truth and revelation, which represents the exposing of lies through the student journalism. It also reflects the glow of youthful energy, always striving for clarity and accountability. This could refer to one of our goals, to publish all documents related to the reconstruction of the Novi Sad railway station.
Orange is for solidarity and momentum. It symbolizes the collective strength of student groups, unions, and university networks. It reflects the wave of activism growing across campuses and cities.
The main focus here is the subject, which references the two faces of Serbia. On the left, it shows a young student, who wants justice, and on the right, a member of the SNS, who supports a corrupt regime. This also shows our struggles under corruption.

reminds me of stained glass
I really like this piece of artwork. It's very cleverly done. Before reading the description I can definitely see the confrontation between the two figures. I was looking for the eyes and was delighted when I found them, they really make this painting. I keep coming back to look at it!

The original photo was taken during one of the blockades in Belgrade, which are also known as "Zastani, Srbijo" (English:"Serbia, stop"). They're held at 11:52 AM, the time of the collapse, and held for 16 minutes to symbolize those who died. It's the opposite of "Srbija ne sme da stane" (English: "Serbia must not stop"), a group led by SNS.

On December 10th, 2024, during a 15-minute blockage in Belgrade, while students were paying respects to lives lost in a tragedy, a man physically attacked one of the students. He was arrested and charged with assault. The entire footage was caught on camera and this photo later became one of the iconic photos of these protests.
