On October 23rd, 1944, Novi Sad was liberated from Nazi German occupation by the Yugoslav Partisans, supported by units of the Soviet Red Army. This marked the end of harsh occupation, during which its people had to endure numerous persecutions, executions, forced labor and the infamous Novi Sad Raid of 1942, when hundreds of civilians were killed by Hungarian fascist forces.
The liberation of Novi Sad was part of a large military campaign to free Vojvodina and northern Yugoslavia during the final phase of the war. Among these notable units which took part in this operation was the 7th Vojvodina Brigade, composed mainly of local volunteers from Vojvodina. This brigade also fought in numerous battles and later earned a reputation for bravery, endurance, and determination.
The event symbolized not only a military victory but also the moral and emotional rebirth of the city and its people. It paved the way for the rebuilding of the city and its inclusion in the newly formed Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia.
