Novi Sad railway station is the main railroad station located in Novi Sad, Serbia. It was opened in 1964, replacing the original station from 1883. The station serves several high-speed trains to Belgrade per day. The station is also part of the fast railways project from Belgrade to Budapest.
A large plateau serves as a turning point for most local bus lines of JGSP Novi Sad, as well as the inbound and outgoing platforms of the international bus station. It's also known for its distinct sawtooth roof, inspired by the shapes of the Pannonian houses. It's also a notable example of modernist architecture in former Yugoslavia.
The station was renovated as part of fast railways project, and it was completed by a consortium of the Chinese companies CRIC-CCCC. Later after the renovation, it was reopened on July 5th, 2024. On November 1st, the canopy collapsed, claiming lives of 16 people. It shocked the nation and soon triggered a major public outcry.
In short, the Novi Sad railway station collapse exposed serious flaws in oversight and construction, leading to deaths, protests, and other political consequences. The future remains uncertain and depends on structural assessments and public decisions in the wake of national mourning and reform demands.
