An attempt at still life painting in monochrome to understand the concept of values. I need to work on getting softer edges between values and the shadow looks a bit - detached. Would appreciate feedback!

It you want softer edges you can work on them, but you certainly don't need them. Looks great and very painterly as it is.
The shadow can easily be fixed by adjusting the form. Maybe do a simple sphere first to see how the shadow should behave
