So this is one I did today, I started off liking it ( while painting) then stood back and felt disappointed. Thought I'd share it anyway before going over it with black gesso!
I only wish I could compose something this good. I love it. Having said that, I totally understand being my own harshest critic.
In case I don’t check in for a while your painting is great! If there are adjustments you want to make here are some options you probably already have thought of. I may not be much help but this is what I typically do.
You can get some blue shop towels from the automotive section of a store (I go to Lowe’s) and wipe off an area of paint you don’t like. If it’s still stubborn you can go as far as taking a rag and putting some thinner on it and wiping off a section you don’t like. Once it’s dry (you can wipe down with another dry rag for that as well) reapply your medium/colors and try again. This is just for an area you don’t like. If you are frustrated with the horizon level of an area you can adjust that with different colors or bring down further into the foreground. You can also adjust light and dark areas of your sky to bring out any changes as far as contrast by thinning your paint and reapplying. If the area is wiped down well you can do so without or use a knife for impact.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. You are a great artist. I was looking over your work. We are our own worst critic and trust me I have started over plenty of times as you were contemplating but your center of interest is really good. Lots of detail. Just my two cents. Have a great day :)
Still have it, will have another look but not happy with left trees, clouds or perspective currently. Thank you both for your kind words, but yes I'm hugely self critical, in all areas of my life sadly. 🙏
For what it's worth I really like it! Good perspective and love the windmill! Try not to be such a hard self critic! Enjoy!!
Why disappointed, I like the dark threatening sky, trees and bushed, mill (good idea!) and gate are well, reflections, waterline and colors of the water, nothing wrong with this painting!
