It’s a pity they’re illegal in California. I would have one if they weren’t.
Illegal, why on earth are they so?
Because California has a plethora of really stupid laws. Having certain animals as pets (hedgehogs, and ferrets for example) are typically illegal because they aren’t native to the area and there’s fear an irresponsible pet owner would tire of caring for the animal and let it loose which could be damaging to our ecosystem. The law makes sense for that reason, there are irresponsible people out there. It would be nice if there was like a way to take a class and get a special license after you prove you will care properly for the animal if you could be allowed one then. I mean, there’s falconer licenses that take YEARS of hard work to obtain. And the can come in at any time I do a welfare check on your bird. We have to pay the city money every year for owning dogs, and they have to be registered. Why no hedgies? That’s crazy California for you.
And we have them running wild here, don't get to see as many nowadays sadly, but they are still about. As I've never been to California I'm not sure what it's like, only ever stopped in Miami airport awaiting transfer to Bahamas, that's the extent of my American visit.
