Original Creation

Deep woods

Paintislife367 22 May 2021

Been a bit since iv done a Forrest paining, wanted to try an original. I always find paintings with a lot of green the most challenging, for me at least. Turned out darker than I wanted, may visit this idea again later.

I really like the shape of the tree.

I agree your tree does have a good shape and it has good bark effect too. Sap green eats everything up sometimes doesn't it. I think the trick is to apply a large expanse of light background then VERY gradually add darker tones to your foliage as you work your way forward. Then put some small highlights on top of that here and there. You might want to try "Forest Edge", mine worked out not too bad, but my "Emerald Waters" was a complete failure, I didn't understand "tone" back then.

Thanks for the feedback, I am usually pretty good with tone, but sap and phalo greens give me the most trouble when the painting is primarily that color. I may give Forrest edge a try though, and perhaps emerald waters to give my self some perspective.
