Original Creation

Abstracted Bristlecone

RebeccaJ 16 May 2025

My Friend Jeanette sent me a photo of a bristle cone pine tree she took while hiking on vacation. These are the oldest trees in America, perhaps the world. Their trunks are gnarled and twisted. They grow in the tortured conditions of the desert Southwest. Some are more than 4000 years old.

I love those trees! Bill Alexander has an episode - Jeffrey pine which I have watched but never did paint. I really enjoy the movement of your brush strokes, large and small, and your color choices as well. If you do not mind a small "critique" - I think the busy background distracts from the focus of the tree. Perhaps a pale blue of the sky as a solid background color? On one of my pet paintings (German shorthaired pointer), @sunnylady commented the same about the background. When my painting was dry, I did a "whitewash" of titanium white over the background and I liked it much better. Again, hope you do not mind the advice 😁. This is a great painting!

Great job deconstructing the bristlecone trunk from real to abstract; lovely swirls and colors!

Thank you for your comments. I found the Bill Alexander Jeffery pine episode. Not sure if I could do one on his level, but might give it a shot. Always have more to learn!

Absolutely beautiful!

Nice work! The photo reminds me of trees I saw at the Grand Canyon's south rim.

I agree with Colin, reminds me of the scream
