Hi everyone!
I just received a half-size round brush (official Bob Ross), and decided to paint "Home Before Nightfall" and, well, this disaster happened...
I had a lot of trouble getting paint to come off from it to make the orange leaves.
The color, from the half-size round brush, would just come out in blobs (not neatly) and it would mix with the color that's underneath.
Don't know why, maybe I didn't put enough color on the brush, maybe I wasn't gentle enough?
Please, if you have some insight, let me know what I did wrong.
The cabin turned out okay at least. I used the little (No. 5) knife to make it.
Thank you in advance for any feedback!
It seems like you had trouble applying highlights, and there could be several reasons for that. As you mentioned, it might be that there wasn’t enough paint—but on the contrary, it’s very likely that there was too much paint on the brush this time. When you try to apply highlight color with too much paint, instead of sticking to the base layer, the base color ends up getting picked up by the brush.
You’ll naturally get a feel for how much paint to load on the brush as you gain more experience, but one recommended approach is to start with a small amount of highlight color and gradually add more as needed. One of my students in class creates beautiful remakes using an unbelievably small amount of paint!
And if the highlight color still doesn’t apply well, as Rebecca says, you can thin the paint using paint thinner or Liquid White to make it easier to apply the highlights.

The orange leaves look fine. Brush work can be tricky, and cones with practice. Bob says thin paint will stick to thick. If theres a layer if magic white, then some other paint, then you try to go on top... it has to be "just right" with multiple layers. The more layers the more difficult. Maybe take Practice strokes on your palette so you can reuse the paint
