Original Creation

Winter Solitude

Roko 02 Feb 2026

Hello everyone.
This is my second painting that I am sharing with this lovely community.
It was fun making this one, since it's a very simple one.
I was having a bit of trouble with the liner brush; my lines were coming out very faint and would be significantly lighter in color. I do not know why this is the case, I used a lot of thinner, got the paint flowing like water, but to no avail. (You can see how dark the big tree is and how it's branches are lighter, even though they are the same color!)
If somebody can explain why is the case I would be very grateful. :)
Any other criticism is, of course, also very welcome, and any tips to improve.
The canvas is 30 cm x 40 cm.
I was using Winsor & Newton colors as well as official Bob Ross colors.
Thank You very much.

Roko: Welcome aboard! Plenty of good help is available on TIB. Your painting looks pretty great already. I've done this scene five times, but only twice that worked (see posts). I could never get the natural bristle BR script liner brush to work well for tree limbs and eventually switched to a #2 nylon liner brush, Aspen series by Princeton, available in the US from Michaels. Fine lines usually require very thin paint. However, when you paint over white, even with thin paint, your dark colors will mix and become lighter, so it's necessary wash the brush and keep reloading with dark paint if you want it darker. Your trees are way better than any in my first three tries. Keep it up!

@jlstutz98 thank You so much for your feedback. I checked out your profile and I must that you do some wonderful and beautiful work! And you have done so many paintings as well! (this is only my 17th painting).
Best of luck to you!

You are off to good start. Thinning paint can make it more transparent. And it can mix with the white underneath.

Hi Roko and welcome to TIB, for a relative newcomer to painting this is super work...well done

@RebeccaJ and @tel thank you so much!
