Original Creation

Lighthouse on the cliff

Sunnylady 20 Sep 2020

I planned him almost a month. Horizon line was changing and I could not reach that effect of being on a cliff when I made sketch in color.
Artistic objective was to create stable composition following some rules and create points of interest/focal point being that lighthouse.
I downloaded pencil sketch that came out of the imagination and then color study I did digitally. It is interesting how things have changed as I progressed with the final painting.

wow..thats beautiful sunny!I love the lighthouse!

Beautiful! I like the cliff effect and the warmth of the lighthouse. The window and tower lighting are very nicely done.

@Pietro1963 thank you!

@ForestVueGallery thanks so much. I am happy that cliff effect turned out to be successful. Thank you for your kind words-Light in the lighthouse was a challenge.

The dark atmosphere is brlilliant! Nothing is severe highlighted but the presence of the lighthouse and still, the whole is delicately in harmony with the rough weather at the back and the present dusk.
An A+++ painting Sunnylady!!

@Voy, thank you so very much for your kind words! I am happy to hear that colors are in harmony. I did not think about colors too much. I was worried about value and not overhighlight, of course there are couple of places I do not like. It just means something for my learning curve. :)

Very nice painting! What I like the most are the wild clouds and the lighthouse is just perfect!

Wonderful to see the process behind your painting!

@Madame Mouton - thank you very much! Initially I meant quit scene, but then I got this wild idea about storm coming and how important lighthouse will be in this case. I am glad you like those big clouds.

@Felix - thank you for your interest! I uploaded couple of more pics which will give a bit more insight as they are more close in time than the first two. Even after sketching with a grid, I still moved things around in a search of better solution.

It’s really fascinating to see how your idea Changed as you Worked it from sketch to final. Thanks for sharing that. It came out really great

@Tom 0779. Tom, don't worry. I am not offended by any means at all. I much appreciate your feedback. I was struggling to create the feel of being on the cliff and with house built first and lighthouse next i was still moving horizon line without readjusting the drawing. I do really say I did that intentionally (sort of experimentation and problem solving that ended up in somewhat ok angles) and this is why I think I had struggles with creation of that feel as I broke perspective rules. Also lighthouse ovals are just made with free hand without following any perspective at all ( hahaha, and that's me who always thinks about perspective ;) . To mitigate a bit of flaw with horizon I tried to dilute the horizon line and make it very soft, you can even see that right side is a bit messed up as I almost forgot about it...

I think you are right and what i need to do is to really take a ruler and pencil to build things as they supposed to be and figure out if it will give me solution with the struggle I had. I think if I lock horizon from the very beginning and take vanishing points far away it should give me an answer.

@Buschleague Thank you for your kindness. It was a first time I shared majority of the process and first time I have such a complicated process. I appreciate all the feedback I received and support is great !

I only started doing few varying sketches may be around 6 months ago ( I don't quite remember) , and now I came to the point I started to actually think what is main object in the painting. I hope it will help me to concentrate more on composition and make my painting process conscious.

Wonderful painting! It looks like you put a ton of work into this one. Great work!

I figured where my perspective has issues. Not only roof :) Thanks Tom for noticing!

@lightsnow. A lot of thinking I would say. Painting was maybe 3-4 hours. Sketch on the canvas with the grid maybe 15-20 min. Moment idea was born was on 16th of August.
Color choice was torturing me a lot. :)

looks nice

@TRMustafa07 - thank you very much!

The glow from the lighthouse is spectacular! I love to see the transitions of the drawing to the painting and all the changes in between. Great one!

Thank you, I will be adding some highlight to the lighthouse and a bit to the clouds to enhance the message that storm is coming and lighthouse is the guide to get everyone in the port safe. Hurry home.
