Sea scene #7

Sunnylady 14 Sep 2022

Acrylics on canvas paper. A4.
Too much of tiny details and I am tired.
Small mistake with light management, but duplicate will be with better light as that will be bigger.

I like the composition and sky colours. I am not sure what you mean about light management mistake? Perhaps could have added a bit more sparkle but that would have to be throughout as I feel like the painting is balanced.

@rah - I added photo of my scribbles with explaining of what light management is in my head.

So pretty much I did not think it through before starting and did not do thumbnail sketch and had to relocate sun to preserve some shadows, but with placing the sun I had to make sun path. The sun needs to be in the center of gradient which I marked with the start on the notes.

I wanted to keep it subdued. I will reassess today or tomorrow if more sparkle will help to add logic to improve the overall weather condition.

honestly I love it the way it is! but, we're all plagued with discontent of our own work to some degree. That's why we keep painting, because we know our next one will be our best (to steal a line from Bob)

@Jeffth - thanks a lot. Funny thing that happens to me when I repeat something second version to me gets worse than the first one. Crazy? I surely try to fix mistakes, but I do other mistakes instead. Anyway it is a learning process always and this is how we roll!

OK, I understand what you mean now. The sun position in N2 would also need to be elevated more and so again would change the sky gradient. This is actually a bit of a struggle to get the sky matching the composition. I personally never do thumbnails and just go straight to a rough sketch. I will give them a try to see if they help me plan better.

Somebody asked me here about light before you. I mentioned that BR never paid much attention to light direction vs Bill Alexander and as soon as beginner artist start thinking about light and subordinates everything to the condition of the sky that artist now is onto the next level of self education. You are totally right it is not an easy task at all to match things vs sun position, versus colors from the sky, versus shadows. But it is so rewarding to see the painting after all those struggles.
