Original Creation

Valentines Day

Sunnylady 16 Feb 2021

This is a beautiful and gentle flower. The aroma is fantastic... so i decided to paint it as i needed to paint something.
I tried to kill two birds with one stone:
1) Practice real flowers - Done and OK-ish.
2) Practice design - Done and failed.

Guess why the background is such a complex color? Because I erased the painting fully 3 times. :)
Do you think I was mad ? - I was not - but I was not pleased with what is happening on the canvas.
Today when I decided to take a look at this "dragon" as Voy calls them, and it pleasantly surprised me. It does not look that bad that is why I decided to post it.

A lot of glare due to thick layer of paint that has not dried yet. Sorry, I could not take better picture. I tried various lighting, various rooms and nothing worked.

Oil on canvas panel. 30 by 35 cm.

My dear dragonslayer, I would suggest you have those real flowers very close to you when viewing your creation, so that their aroma will lighten this up.
Accept a new style with this, why not?, since it looks far more impressionistic then your usual artworks. So for sure, be happy with this since those wonderful roses are so easily recognizable and distinguished.
I'm sure you will tame many more dragons in the future, no worries!

Thank you my dear friend for your continuous support! I was quite interested to see that depth that will come from transparent colors. I think you are right that it is more impressionistic looking. Thank you very much for your kind words!

Sunnylady! This is beautiful. You did a wonderful job. I like the background (no one has ever said I am partial to purple though!), so you should be pleased with that happy accident!

Thank you a Doggymommee! That is indeed happy incident. It was supposed to be black with red and greens. :)

I love the purple! I would never have guessed that it wasn’t your intention without the explanation under the painting. I completely understand background hiccups though. I think I spent more time painting and repainting the background in my grapes painting than I actually did on the grapes themselves! Sometimes our paintings don’t end up going exactly as we plan them but it all turns out alright in the end. Happy accidents!

I think you captured the impressionist view of the roses quite nicely and the background turned out to be a winner!

@lilikins - oh you are so right, background was supposed to be shimmering black, but at the end I just smeared it with my hand :) I need to say I erased to canvas to prepare place for flowers and then went in with darks I think I did full circle on a learning spiral and back to loosing dark values. That's ok as I understand it and being more watchful of such my behaviors...

@Lzicchinella - I think background wins as it works as uniting mix between reds and greens as it is made of those colors. It turns somehow in the "triangle" color scheme. Which interesting as it was not planned at all :) Happy accident.

@Lilikins - you know in my last paintings I let the painting take me to wherever it goes. Many people say it is wrong approach as we need to plan and stick to the plan, pre-imagine and paint, etc. I do not know it feels more liberating, sometimes frustrating but that comes through my brain processed. I am still in search of my own self in the painting as I want it to be as much diverse as I could and i think sliding to the patterns will be happening automatically with more and more practice ( I think this is what in fact is called style, when we figure out something works and we stop searching). One good things that I started realizing only this month that I need to work more on hidden shapes. Hopefully I will be seeing them better.
For example if you look in the roses they form trapezoid/trapezium. But in bigger shape with leaves on the left this is rectangle. White flowers form circle and triangles inside trapezoid. What professionals say simple shapes attract attention. I understand as this part of Gestalt in art. But practicality of implementing this struggles a lot.

Totally agree with you that paintings do not go as we plan initially. We call them happy accidents but may be they are subconscious decisions that we did not learnt to bring to conscious world yet.

This is beautiful. I can smell these flowers here in canada. A dragon day for you would be like a really really good day for me😉

@LJM, you have tons of wonderful paintings! I think I was expecting things to go nice and smooth but they did not and that’s why that turned in a cute dragon. I was nicely surprised the day I decided to check it on. It looked better than I remembered it.

🙂thanks Sunnylady...I appreciate your kindness. For me, I absolutely need a tutorial to help me along. I wish I could paint as well as you, as your portfolio of paintings here is amazing.
