Portrait of a man (monochrome)

Tarthur 16 Jun 2026

This is a portrait of a man from a youtube video tutorial of a sorts. Painted on tracing paper, since that was the closest thing I could find to vellum around here, that was recommended as a cheap surface. It did get wrinkly on me, although I did forget that you can't use solvent on it (water since I use watersoluble oils). Guess I'll try again without water next time.

Painted using only Titanium White and Lamp Black. I also noticed just now, that my paint set didn't come with Ivory Black, so the few paintings before this were also painted using Lamp Black. Oops! I guess it explains the tinting strength.

It looks very human, although it doesn't quite look like the person I was painting. Way closer than my last portrait, though! I'm not that good at drawing quite yet. I think the initial drawing was a tad too wide. Also one glaring mistake is that the mouth is misplaced to the left quite a bit, but when I noticed it, I was too exhausted to start messing with it again. I guess it's also misaligned, it should be in a bit of an angle, but it looks pretty straight.

Overall I'm happy with it. I especially like how the eyes and nose came out. I think painting in monochrome is helping me with the basics of matching value. The process was also quite painless, I had an organized palette, and I had one brush for each value, so I didn't need to wash the brushes that much. I notice that I tend to not like to fiddle with details that much, which is the same with landscapes. I'll add some photos from the process of painting it.
